CITY OF INDUSTRY For more than 15 years, newly appointed Nelson Elementary School Principal, Dr. Marci Chavez has been serving the Hacienda La Puente Unified community, providing her students with a safe and nurturing learning environment, while focusing on improving school culture with positivity.

The Hacienda La Puente Unified Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jiménez formally introduced Chavez as the Nelson Elementary School Principal during the Board meeting on Aug. 11.

Chavez began her career in 2006, serving as a math and science teacher at Orange Grove Middle School. After earning her administrative credential and a doctoral degree in educational leadership at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Chavez worked as an Assistant Principal at Mesa Robles School for 10 years. In July 2021, she was appointed as interim principal at Nelson Elementary School, prioritizing relationships, self-advocacy and leading staff and students to a successful reopening in a post-pandemic environment.

“For this school year, I hope to facilitate conversations centered around student achievement,” Chavez said. “We have built a level of trust at Nelson and now we must continue to hold this high standard in academics and showcase our students’ success developed through Hacienda La Puente Unified’s innovative curriculum.”

In addition to her new role as principal, Chavez serves as the president of the Hacienda La Puente Administrators Association (HLPAA). Her hard work and dedication over the past 12 years in HLPAA and performance as assistant principal at Mesa Robles have earned her the title of 2022 Secondary School Co-Administrator of the Year for Region 15 by the Association of California School Administrators.

“The Board of Education and Hacienda La Puente Unified community was proud to highlight Dr. Marci Chavez’s District contributions, accomplishments and formally introduce her as the Nelson Elementary School Principal,” Jiménez said. “Thank you, Dr. Chavez, for developing trust, empathy and cultivating confidence within our Nelson Knights community.
